The importance of professional care

Plaques are constantly forming on your teeth. This sticky bacterial film erodes teeth and breaks down gum tissue. All of us can manage the development of plaque by removing food particles with diligent, daily brushing and flossing. The sugars and starches in foods and beverages mix with bad bacteria to produce harmful plaque. But, even those patients with exceptional oral hygiene cannot possibly remove all plaque, such as from hard-to-reach spaces toward the back of the mouth or from hidden and crowded areas that tend to trap food debris.

And, if plaque is not removed and allowed to build up on the teeth and other surfaces, it becomes tartar or calculus. Tartar is stubborn; it can only be removed with specialized dental instruments. Our professional team is trained on how to use these tools properly to support your safety and oral health.

The basics

These “standard” cleanings should be done at our office every six months. You may need to have your teeth cleaned more frequently if risk factors are present. These risks include active gum disease or other conditions that need to be monitored; comorbidities such as diabetes can make you susceptible to oral problems; or habits like smoking and a poor diet. During your appointment, Dr. Dan Hwang will also examine your teeth, gums, and other oral structures to ensure they are healthy. Even though your mouth may feel and look fine, dental decay or gum disease can be lurking. Many oral problems do not produce symptoms during their earliest stages.

The care is “routine”; our approach is not

We use many advanced diagnostics and adjunct technologies to support the most comfortable and pleasant experience at our practice. For instance, lasers present a non-invasive way to accurately detect early-stage or hidden decay or help healthy attachments between the teeth and gums.

Should we need to resolve existing dental or periodontal conditions, Dr. Hwang may recommend non-surgical scaling and root planing. Think of this as a “deep clean” alternative to “standard” six-month cleanings. Scaling removes plaque underneath the gum line, whereas planing smooths out rough root surfaces where bacteria accumulate. If you live in or around Lake Stevens, Arlington, Everett, Stanwood, Camano Island, and the surrounding region, do not wait for problems, such as pain and bleeding to arise to schedule an appointment with Dr. Dan Hwang of Creo Dentistry.   Contact us today at (360) 502-7217 to schedule your appointment at our Marysville office.
